When we think of Assam’s textile heritage, the luxurious Muga and Eri silks usually come to mind. But there’s another part of this rich history: Assam cotton. Historically, traditional hand-woven Assam cotton was thick, bulky, and slightly rough. It was perfect for heavy home use but not meant for modern, everyday wardrobes.
Today, that story is changing. Assam-based textile designer Anushka Das is giving the state’s traditional cotton a completely fresh, contemporary identity that perfectly blends cultural roots with modern aesthetics.
The Vision Behind the Transformation
Anushka Das, the creative force behind Studio Anurupa, Anushka Annasuya, and Kalpavriksh Design, saw beyond the limitations of the traditional fabric. Her vision was clear: to create a lighter, finer, and much more fluid version of Assam cotton.
She wanted to take the state’s heritage weaving techniques and adapt them for both local wearers and the global market. The goal was to make this culturally rich textile a staple in modern, everyday fashion without losing its original charm.
Empowering Traditional Women Weavers
To turn this vision into reality, Anushka collaborated directly with the grassroots artisans of Assam. Starting in late 2022, she joined hands with the women weavers of the Aagor Society in the Chirang district.
Currently running 30 active looms, this project supports skilled weavers across Chirang, Kokrajhar, and Udalguri. In addition, she works closely with the Tezpur Mahila Samity, a historic cooperative established in 1947. Together, they are crafting premium dress materials and beautiful home linens.
What Makes This “New” Assam Cotton Unique?
The revitalized Assam cotton brings several incredible improvements that make it stand out:
- A Softer, Fluid Drape: By blending traditional Assamese weaving methods with high-quality Salem cotton yarns, the heavy texture is completely transformed. The thread count now reaches up to 120s for garments, resulting in incredibly soft, breathable, and fluid clothing.
- Eco-Friendly and Safe: The entire process uses Azo-free dyes. This means the fabric is 100% chemical-free and sustainable, prioritizing the safety and health of both the artisans and the final consumers.
- Excellent Colour Fastness: One major challenge with handlooms is color bleeding. Anushka’s process ensures strong color fastness, keeping the intricate motifs looking sharp and vibrant even after multiple washes.
Celebrating Cultural Motifs: A Tale of Two Traditions
Anushka’s designs bring out the best of Assam’s diverse cultural aesthetic by blending two distinct weaving traditions:
- Classic Assamese Elegance: Typical Assamese designs usually feature an elegant white or soft cream base. They are brought to life with delicate extra-weft motifs like creepers, rhinos, birds, and the iconic jaapi.
- Bold Bodo Geometry: The Bodo tribe’s influence introduces a striking geometric vocabulary. It features bold, colorful motifs like the dinghkiya bibar (fern), kasau bikha (turtle’s shell), and phareo megon (pigeon’s eye), beautifully woven in vivid reds, yellows, and greens.
The Magic of the Traditional Bamboo Loom
The distinct look of Assam cotton is deeply tied to the traditional looms. Typically constructed from bamboo and wood, these lightweight looms are raised above the ground to suit Assam’s highly humid and flood-prone environment.
These specialized looms allow the weavers to hand-pick and carefully insert the extra-weft motifs, which gives the fabric its signature delicate patterns and beautiful, natural drape.
